Let's start with the most obvious question: what is will power?
By definition, will power is the control executed by one to do something, or the ability to restrain in the face of temptation.
So let's break this down.
Will power is the ability to say "I won't" to temptation, "I will" to things you don't feel like doing and "I want" to things we know could come in the future if we enforce our will power. Remembering the why when temptation strikes is key to having a strong will power. If you can master these, the I 'wonts', 'wills' and 'wants', you can achieve anything you want to in your life if you truly apply yourself.
So why do we give into temptation, regardless of the goals we set for ones self? Isn't that self sabotage? Well when it comes to the science behind will power, the neurotransmitter dopamine is partially responsible. So what is dopamine and why is it trying to get in the way of your goals? Dopamine helps to control reward and pleasure seeking in the brain. Dopamine makes us take action to seek reward and does not care about your long term goal - it only cares about instant gratification such as cheese pizza. (mmm.. cheese pizza...). So its up to you to overcome to chemical response you're fighting against.
So given what we know is chemically responsible how we over come temptation? How do we control our own will power?
Well, we have to train ourselves and reprogram our thinking. This is literally all in your head! So how do you do it? Positive self talk- start to remind yourself of you goal and ask yourself why you are feeling what you are feeling. Are you "treating" yourself? If so, why do you treat yourself with food that will sabotage your goal? What will you get in the end versus what's the pay off if you stay strong? The more you self-analyze, the more you can restructure your thought process. Think of an alternative 'treat' that won't get in the way of your goals, but instead will enhance them. Eventually you will start being able to say no more often when you should and do the things that get you to your long term goal instead of giving into short-term satisfaction.
This process takes time and practice. Remember each time you say no to short-term satisfaction you are building yourself up and up to be stronger in the future. It doesn't get easier, you just get stronger.
