Kendra for example is sensitive to dairy and gluten - my first thought was “Man, it’s hard enough for me to hit my macros and put on muscle while trying to control my sweet tooth!” So I definitely needed to know how she maintained a healthy and balanced lifestyle (and a rocking bod to boot!)
When it comes to the kitchen, Kendra says she enjoys looking for new recipes. Since these allergies are becoming more common, luckily she was able to point out some resources for people who are in the same boat.
“I use a lot from Joyous Health and Ohsheglows. They're both from Ontario so I know I can buy the ingredients locally. I also use genuine health products for greens and protein because they're fermented. [They’re] good for people with digestive issues”
If you have a gluten allergy, rice-based products are a good go-to, but that doesn’t mean mowing down on popcorn and rice chips. You can also substitute with quinoa, sweet potatoes and whole-wheat rice are a great way to hit the proper amount of carbohydrates. If you find yourself avoiding carbs in general, remember your protein intake will be extra important, especially when exercising.
While some gluten-free options may seem like your saviour so you can still enjoy breads and desserts, they tend to contain more calories. So if you’re also looking to maintain a healthy weight, remember exercising is key. Especially strength training since osteoporosis and osteopenia may be secondary conditions that develop later in life for some people with celiac disease. Building muscle will help prevent bones and joints from weakening. If you have other digestive issues, remember that exercise also improves circulation and blood flow which is important for proper digestion.Since some people are known to have allergy-similar symptoms during or after exercise, it’s important to know your limits, stay properly fuelled and hydrated and keep your doctor in the loop.
Here are a few staple recipes that my friend Kendra enjoys:
