To wrap up our discussion on things that limit your progress we wanted to touch on mindset. You might be reading this thinking “how does what I think have to do with my results?” Well your thoughts have much more impact on your body than you might think.
You are your thoughts
Have you ever heard the saying - you are your thoughts? Well it's more than true. If you look yourself in the mirror every day and say things like “you can’t do this” or “you can’t lose weight”, do you think you are setting yourself up for success? Obviously not, because the more you truly believe something to be true the more likely you will be to take the steps to make that happen, no matter what is it. So you wake up, look in the mirror and tell yourself, “I hate my body and I do not want to workout”. How do you think your day will go? Even if you do decided to still workout do you think you will go in there and own it? No, because you have created a negative feeling around that workout already. A negative mind set is only going to lead to you be unmotivated and not have the drive you need to succeed at your fitness goals. Now let’s pretend you wake up, look in the mirror and say “today is going to be great and I will workout because I love myself and I want to be even better”.
Mind over matter
Ok so mindset can affect our behaviour which affects our actions towards are goals. Now you may be wondering, "does it really affect our body's ability to get fit?" Yes it does… let’s dive a little deeper to explain why.
Ok, so you have a negative mindset about your fitness in some way. What happens to a negative mind? A negative mind gets stressed. Negativity leads us to be stressed, whether we like it or not. What happens when we get stressed? Our hormones go out of whack and cortisol is produced in large quantities. High cortisol means high insulin (the science behind this is for another day) but what does this mean - You guessed it! This causes us to actually store fat! So you are stressed about being out of shape or feeling fat but being stressed makes you store more fat. Well crap. This is one vicious cycle you probably didn't know existed. Now are you seeing how mindset can affect our progress?
Break the cycle
So how do we break this cycle? It's obviously easier said than done, but you have to change your mindset. Self talk is huge. Stop looking in the mirror filled with all the things you hate or want to change. Be happy for where you are and see the potential you have within you. Tell yourself you can do this and you will do this. Find a mantra. Write down positive affirmations. Read inspiring stories by confident-driven people. Hire someone to help you reach your goals. Do whatever it is you need to do to get yourself out of that negative mind. You can do this! take one day at a time and repeat after us: “I got this”
