Here is a list of different techniques/tips and tricks we have found and implemented to make tracking that much easier and more effective for you, and might even give you new ideas you're not currently doing. If you haven't downloaded MyFitnessPal yet, now's the time!
Hack #1: Enter your favourite recipes and log by serving size
Do you have a favourite recipe you love it? Enter the ingredients and save it under 'My Recipes'. Or, you can even import one from a website using the URL. Either way, this has the added bonus of including everything you put in it, and then being able to the log by the appropriate serving size.
In the example below, we've added in all the ingredients for Turkey burgers made with feta and spinach. The recipe makes 4 burgers, so the macros are shown for 1 burger, including the bun.
Hack #2: Don’t log exercise for extra calories
We repeat: "Do not log your exercise in myfitnesspal". Why? Because then the app gives you extra calories into your daily requirement. Except you have already accounted for exercise when setting your caloric goal. Therefore, if you log more activity and get extra calories in return, you will be eating much more food than you should be in order to reach your goal. This feature always sabotages people so do not let this be you!
Hack #3: Save favourite meals for quick logging
We love this feature. Are you someone who eats similar things day in and out? Make your life easier and use the feature in the app that allows you to just save any meal as one entity.
So you love our protein crepes with peanut butter and banana recipe? Save yourself your time by saving it as one item and you will no longer have to track each food individually.
Recipe: 1 cup egg whites + 1 scoop vanilla protein powder + 1 large banana + 1 tablespoon natural creamy peanut butter.
Hack #4: Weigh your food
Hack #5: Track your macronutrients
Hack #6: Add friends for accountability
We love this feature. Adding people to your friends list on MyFitnessPal can really help you stay accountable. Do you think you will be as willing to eat a whole pizza if you have to log it if your best friends can see what you ate? We don’t think so. The more people you have following you on your journey the more and more accountable you will stay to your goal. So tell your friends what your goal is and let them help you stay accountable. And they'll know if you haven't logged on for several day!
Try this challenge with your friends: You all have to log on for X number of days/weeks in a row. The first one who doesn't, buys the group a coffee/tea/cheat snack.
Hack #7: Follow MyFitnessPal Blog and try their recipes
MyFitnessPal is great for posting valuable information on their app. Check the home page daily for inspiration and new menu ideas. We know how boring it can get eating the same thing day in and out no matter how committed you are to a goal. Take advantage of their recipes as they will be in line with your goals of a healthy lifestyle. As a bonus, they'll be easy to log into your food diary.
We hope you now have a better understanding of how to use myfitnesspal and that this blog will help motivate you to continue to track and reach your goals. Feel free to friend us on the app, beamfitness:
