Before we dive into this topic head first, here is something you probably did not know.
Now this topic has a lot of factors that can come into play.. HOWEVER, the long and short of it is no. Carbs do not make you fat. Carbs are not made up of little evil particles making your jeans too tight. Can you gain fat if you eat too many carbs? Well yah! If they are over consumed they will make you gain weight, of course. But, anything in access can make you gain fat. What makes you gain fat is eating too many calories than your body needs based on your activity levels.
You have probably wondered before how exactly do carbs act on your body? Well, carbs are actually absorbed into your blood and go right to the liver. Your liver can only hold up to around 100 grams worth of carbs (which is now stored as glycogen). Once the liver is "full" the carbs in your system will go to the muscles. Finally, when the muscle stores are full (250-400) grams later, the rest of the carbs which are now triglycerides are stored as fat. So, how do we make sure that the carbs don't end up being stored as fat? You must exercise my friends. Exercise will "empty" the carbs out of the muscles so you can eat more carbs to fill them up again!
This leads me directly to my next point!
Not everyone can go around eating all the carbs! How many carbs you should eat is very much dependent on your goal and current physique. .
Well, now you must be wondering.. How many carbs do I need?
Every BODY is different. This is very dependant on your exercise levels. People who are extremely active will benefit from a much higher carb diet as they are constantly draining their muscle glycogen stores. Therefore they need to eat more and more carbs to refill these stores. People who are very inactive are usually better off on a much lower carb diet because they will not be burning through the muscle glycogen (stored carbs), and do not have to worry about filling their reserves back up. People in this case could get away with just eating enough carbs to fuel the brain and nervous system which would be around 80-100 ish grams. Yes, you can go as low as 0 carbs but the side effects of such a diet are grumpiness, foggy brain, sleepless nights and sometimes depression can be very nasty.
Think of this process as driving a car. If you drive your car around a lot, you need to keep refilling its gas so it has the ability to keep going. If you do not put more gas in (eat carbs) your car will eventually stop running (your body will get extremely tired). If you hardly ever drive, you don’t need to keep filling up with gas because the tank will still be pretty full. If you try to put more gas in a tank that is already full (eating more and more carbs when you do not exercise), your gas tank will overflow (you will gain weight as your stores in your body are already full).
So there you have it. Do carbs make you gain fat? No! It is the process of overeating and not exercising that causes one to gain fat. So there you have it! Carbs are not so evil after all.
